The farm speaks in different voices depending on the time of the year and the hour of the day. For about a month now it is the rattling and crackle of leaves, as they drift down the length of teak trees, dislodged by a bird that takes off suddenly, or the breeze. Often, I have turned around, looking over my shoulder in anticipation. A footfall or a low whisper……At the bottom of the tree is one more leaf, withered over the year, having done its job of nourishing a few more cells, breathing in the light and air.
The farmer is grateful for this bounty. It’s a great time to make composts. Raked up in a pile our leaf now nourishes the earthworm. The farm finds yet another voice!
